Huge inequality in who creates tourism emissions

There is huge inequality between countries responsible for significant tourism emissions, and those who are not.

  • Visitors from USA, China and India contribute 39% of the global tourism emissions
  • Visitors from top twenty countries (mostly highly developed countries) contribute 75%
  • The remaining 155 countries globally collectively contribute just 25% of tourism emissions

When consideration is given to the proportionality of each country’s contribution to tourism emissions, it is apparent that a small number of countries create most of the tourism emissions globally.

While the top 20 emitters are responsible for 75% of tourism emissions, it is clear that low-lying island nations and developing countries with low tourism emissions are disadvantaged because they are (and will continue to be) disproportionately negatively impacted by climate change.
